All You Need to Know When Surfing Down Under

When you think of Australia, what is the first thing that comes to your mind? Probably either kangaroos or surfing. Well, the latter is the Aussie way of life, and if you’re really a surfing enthusiast and want to do this in some of the best spots in the world, then go get your plane ticket and head off to the Land Down Under. However, if you’re a newbie in the department of surfing Down Under, you have to know a couple of things, such as the equipment that you need to take with you, the possible dangers, and the most important of all – the best beaches, where you will make this magic happen. Luckily for you, we have answers to all of your questions!

Is it always safe?

Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee that this is always the safest option, but is it the most exciting and awesome? Definitely yes. Before heading off to a beach in order to surf, the best idea would be to talk to the locals about it, and see if the water is good for surfing during that particular day. Keep an eye out for tides and weather forecasts. If you want to surf at a quiet and empty beach, be our guest, but you need to be careful with swell magnets and rocks coming to the surface – these can be quite dangerous. Another popular question that many ask is connected to sharks. So, are there sharks and how common are shark attacks? As you probably know, sharks love warm and shallow water, so the it is not impossible to run into one. However, you need to bear in mind that attacks are rather rare, so it would be best to surf at a beach where you have a lot of other people around.

What equipment to choose?

Surfing in Australia is not a small thing, so you really need to make sure that you have all the high-quality equipment with you. First of all, surfboards are the most important, so investing in a good one, such as in one of the great Solarez surfboards might be an excellent idea. It’s not for nothing that Beyoncé yelled Surfboard in “Drunk in Love”, right? If Beyoncé thinks it’s important, then it certainly is. Back to topic – surfboards should be your equipment number 1, but you also need to think of everything else you might need. Another essential are boardshorts, so invest in a good pair if you want to be fully prepared. Also, since the ocean can get a bit chaotic from time to time, remember to bring traction pads or surf wax to keep yourself from slipping off your board. And finally, if you want to take photos or videos while surfing (pics or it didn’t happen!), a GoPro Surfboard Mount is the thing for you.

Where to surf?

Australia offers hundreds of amazing surfing spots, and you can always ask a local to recommend something hidden but still great. However, these are the most popular spots that are definitely worth visiting:

1. Queensland, Noosa, Tea Tree Bay

Just 500m from the National Park car park, you will get to see this amazing beach that is a Heaven for all the surfers. Make sure to check the wind before coming here, though, because the best conditions come with a NE-E swell and south wind.

2. Gold Coast, Currumbin

One of the most beautiful places in Australia and not only for surfers is located a bit further north from the popular Snapper Rocks. This beach is simply mesmerizing, but the waves can get so big that this place is sometimes advised for advanced surfers only.

3. Northern Beaches, Sydney

If you want to spend some time in Sydney as well, then the Northern Beaches might be the place for you to surf. This surfing spot is 20 km long, so you will basically see a bunch of people surfing and enjoying this experience. You will also be able to find surf schools for beginners in the vicinity, just in case you need some extra help.

4. Bells Beach, Victoria

This is considered the spiritual home of surfing in Australia, which means that it’s definitely worth coming here. It’s magical, extremely beautiful and is the home of the Curl Pro Surf & Music festival.

5. Forster, Boomerang Beach

Another pearl of the Down Under, this beach is extremely popular with surfers. You will get to find many tides here, but the banks are moving quite a lot, so sometimes it’s going to be pretty dull (so make sure that you hit the right day!) You will also be able to see dolphins here, as this is a place they really like to hang out.

Ta-da! Know you practically know everything you need to know, but you can always ask for an Aussie to recommend something, or someone who’s already had this experience. Have a great time!
