Thinking of heading to Australia in the coming weeks or months? There’s so much to enjoy about the island nation, with a wide variety of culture for you to dive headfirst into. But it isn’t all rainbows and sunshine. While you will have a great time in Oz, there are a handful of things you might also want to watch out for.

Today, let’s run through four aspects of Australia where you’ll want to be wary.

It’s massive

Much like the US, Australia is a shockingly large country. As the sixth largest in the world, it can take as long as three days to get from one end to the other. This mass gap between cities makes traversing the entirety of the Aussie coastline nothing short of an outright slog.

It can even take up to 6 hours to fly from one corner to the other. For the reference of travellers from Europe, this equates to a round-trip between the UK and Russia. That’s no mean feat for Aussies looking to visit family on the other side of the nation.

The Bugs

If you’re not a fan of insects or wild animals in general for that matter, then Australia is not the place for you. There is a multitude of different creepy crawlies rocking about, all ready to leap out from beneath a leaf and give you the fright of a lifetime.

It isn’t all chuckles though, with some of these creatures actually able to cause you genuine harm. Australian Geographic provide would-be travellers with a list of 30 of the most potent to watch out for. Make sure to keep these creatures in mind when you’re out and about.

The Australians like to drink

It’s not necessarily a bad thing – so long as you’re willing to adopt the party lifestyle yourself. As 1Cover proudly point out, people from Down Under are more than fond of the odd tipple or two (regardless of the time of day).

This might be an issue if you’re planning on taking a wholesome family trip. That in mind, it’s not like the Aussies are an uncontrollable wrecking force when they’re on the lash. Just be prepared to see a few people stumbling about of an evening in busier areas.

It’s Expensive

Australia costs a lot. Drink, Eat, Travel suggests budgeting for as much as $100-200 a day when you’re there. They do also suggest a number of ways to alleviate this problem, though. Some of the best include:

  • Staying in an Airbnb or hostel
  • Cooking your own food instead of going out for meals every night
  • Flying and travelling with budget airlines

Keep these tips in mind if you want to try and avoid forking out a small fortune on your trip to Oz. They could be lifesavers

You should now have a clearer understanding of the potential dangers and risks of a trip to Australia. Don’t let them put you off, but do remember to show some sensibility when heading out there.
