You might have heard of the Machu Picchu ruins, which are classified as one of the Modern Seven Wonders and are visited by thousands of people each day.
That’s a lot of people, and if you want to visit without all the crowds and enjoy the site for yourself, there are a few things you need to know.
Inca Trail to Machu Picchu
You will need to travel by train to get close to the ruins and then hike a short distance from there to the site. Some people will take the longer hike of 4 days and 3 nights, along the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. If you are up for that, consider taking that hike to have a more memorable adventure. There is a less crowded hike available as well, along the Lares Trek, which takes the same amount of time. In fact, there are several different treks available, and you may want to look into each of those to get the most from your excursion. When hiking, make sure you pack appropriately – wear the right clothing, and pack travel toiletries.
Inca Jungle Trek
Inca Jungle Trek to Machu Picchu is probably the most exciting of the different treks you could take to Machu Picchu. It involves mountain biking, riding the river and even some ziplining. It’s not for the faint of heart or the less adventurous, but for someone who loves the outdoors, it will be amazing. There are some great views to be had, and you’ll be making your way along jungle trails with the assistance of a tour guide. You will spend your nights in either hostels or hotels, so don’t think you will be left sleeping on the ground or in a tent.
Choquequirao to Machu Picchu Trek
This is a less visited set of ruins that hasn’t been fully excavated yet. It does not have the crowds of Machu Picchu, and it feels more like lost city waiting to be discovered. There aren’t even any roads nearby, so it is definitely off the beaten path compared to the Machu Picchu ruins and trails.
Take the River route through Yavero
This expedition is river based, and you will actually begin your 11-day journey at the City of Gold, Paititi. Following the river takes you through the mountains and into the rainforest, deep into the jungle. You will have to travel some of the rapids and make your way through a canyon, so it is really exciting and breathtaking.
Make sure you choose a route that is right for your fitness level. The way, you won’t be left regretting your choice of trails and you will be able to appreciate the journey more.
