f the sun rising over the glittering dome of the Shwedagon Pagoda would be a rewarding sight to start your journey to Myanmar, the 99 meters tall pagoda is situated on Singuttara Hill, to the west of Kandawgyi Lake, and dominates the Yangon skyline.
Restaurants in People’s park and people’s square, right opposite to the southern exit of the pagoda offers typical Burmese cuisines, which would be the perfect thing to have after an hour’s incredible sight of the shrines and stupas.
Kandawgyi Lake located close to the Shwedagon Pagoda is a home to lush vegetation, relaxing restaurants and cafes, which makes it a wonderful place to spend a relaxed afternoon. Areas near Karaweik Palace Restaurant in the lake are lively throughout the day.
The Drug Elimination museum is one of the quirkier museums in the world, it’s not just inexplicable by name but also by nature. It was built by the previous military government to portray how seriously they were dealing with the country’s drug problems. It exhibits what the country’s previous government did to those addicted to drugs.
If you are interested to learn about Myanmar’s past, the national museum would be the right place to stop by. There are artefacts covering different aspects of the country’s history, celebrations of Myanmar’s various ethnic groups and the Taungoo dynasty.
At dusk, the streets of China Town streams with hucksters. China Town (Tayoke Tan) is located in the centre of Yangon. 17th, 18th, 19th, 20th, 22nd, 23rd, 24th and Sint Oh Dan, Latha and Bo Ywe roads are part of the township. Stalls in the street 17th to 19th offer a typical Chinese ambience and authentic cuisines served in a typical way.
Walking through the gridded and gridlocked streets you can experience the vibrant part of the city, streets are filled with hawkers selling almost everything from map to souvenirs, this is also a magnificent place to see the impressive colonial buildings built during the British regime.
Bogyoke market, in downtown, is the spot if you want to take home typical Myanmar’s arts and crafts.
