If ever there was a country made for road trips, it’s Australia. Driving all over the sixth biggest country in the world, you are likely to encounter natural wonders, breathtaking landscapes and bustling cities. There are many amazing road trip routes to be explored in Australia, but the most important one is surely the amazing Great Ocean Road. The southeastern road which connects the towns and cities along the Victorian coastline. If you’re thinking of exploring it, here are some places that should definitely make it onto your itinerary.
Before you leave
This stretch of coast is excellent for road trips, since you can adapt the duration and route to your own needs and wishes. We recommend splitting it into at least three days, to have sufficient time to explore and enjoy Victoria at its best. While there are plenty of towns along the way, you will still mostly be driving on the open road. Don’t forget to have your car thoroughly checked by a mechanic so you aren’t left stranded on the side of the road somewhere. Of course, you can never foresee every possible scenario, so bear in mind that you can always call a mobile mechanic to your rescue, if you should need one.
Man-made stops
Geelong, the second biggest city in Victoria is an ideal starting point for your journey. While you’re there, sample the local wines and craft beers, take a dip in the shimmering waters of Corio Bay and drink in the fascinating Gold Rush history visible in every building of the historical centre. If you have the time, stop to witness the Budj Bim – the Aboriginal heritage site of the Gunditjmara people. There you will find the world’s oldest aquaculture structure, which dates back an astounding 6000 years! Finally, don’t forget Portland, the oldest European town in Victoria. While you’re there, take a ride on the tourist tram, visit the Maritime Museum, and catch a glimpse of the fascinating creatures who live on these shores: seals, whales and koalas.
Natural Wonders
If there’s one thing the coast of Victoria has in spades, its dramatic scenery. The views all along the way are postcard worthy, and more. The expanse of the ocean juxtaposed against the coastal cliffs and exciting rock formations will take your breath away. The most famous attraction is surely the Twelve Apostles – imposing limestone stacks jutting out of the waves (there are actually eight of them, though). Just a few minutes drive from them, you will find the famous Loch Ard Gorge, a notorious but stunning shipwreck site. Also in Port Campbell National Park you can see the Grotto, a popular sinkhole, and the London Arch – a natural arch formed by erosion.
For hiking enthusiasts
Those who aren’t satisfied with just getting out of their car to stretch their legs should definitely explore the Great Ocean Walk. Of course, with a length of 104 km, all of the treasures of the trail can hardly be uncovered during a shortstop. The trail covers the stretch between Apollo Bay and the Twelve Apostles and passes through the Otway National Park. Don’t miss the fascinating Cape Otway Lightstation, and the Shipwreck coast – the scene of shipwrecks in the 19th century, when Bass Strait became an important part of the trade route from Europe.
The Great Ocean Road is an attraction in and of itself. It was built in 1919, by soldiers returning from World War I, and it was dedicated as a memorial to Australian soldiers fallen in the Great War. It is now listed as an Australian National Heritage and is one of the top sights in the country.

Road trips where there’s an amazing natural landscape as well as great towns are definitely the ultimate choice, that combination is hard to beat. The Twelve Apostles are on my wishlist to see some day.
